Royal Mail is seeking a record number of temporary workers this Christmas
Typically, the postal service hires between 15,000 and 23,000 extra members of staff over the festive period.
This year it aims to hire almost two-thirds more than usual, reaching a record-breaking 33,000 additional workers, who will work mainly in sorting offices and delivery vans.
More than 13,000 mail centre sorting posts are available in England, with the others being spread across the rest of the UK.
The temporary workers will support more than 115,000 postal workers in permanent roles.
Around 1,000 new recruits will be supporting Royal Mail’s new Covid-19 testing kit collection service.
According to Royal Mail, the increase in demand is the result of altered shopping habits due to increased coronavirus restrictions.
A spokesperson said:
“During these unprecedented times, we believe it is critical that Royal Mail continues to deliver.
“We want to do our best to deliver Christmas for our customers and support the effort on the pandemic.
“This helps the whole country to celebrate and stay safe during these difficult times.”
This news comes shortly after Royal Mail announced it’s new 72p parcel collection service in an attempt to capitalise on the rise in online shopping.
