The UK Space Agency has thrown its weight behind Rolls-Royce’s cutting-edge nuclear power research aimed at powering future Moon bases.
Rolls-Royce’s Nuclear Moon Base Plan
Rolls-Royce scientists are racing ahead with their Micro-Reactor programme. The goal? To develop a compact nuclear reactor that could supply reliable power on the lunar surface. The tech focuses on the reactor core, fuel, heat transfer, and converting that heat into electricity.
Beyond the Moon: Powering Defence and Industry
This micro-reactor technology isn’t just for space. Rolls-Royce sees huge potential for commercial and defence sectors back on Earth. Their aim is to deliver world-class power and propulsion solutions across markets, while pushing clean energy innovation for UK companies.
Powering Lunar Communication and Navigation
The nuclear tech will support the European Space Agency’s ambitious Moonlight programme. This project plans to launch a satellite constellation around the Moon, enabling astronauts, rovers, and scientific instruments to communicate and transfer vast amounts of data — including high-def video — as well as navigate the lunar surface safely.
