Burton-on-Trent Man Jailed for Brutal Child Sex Abuse
Sydney Showell, 71, from Burton-on-Trent, has been locked up for over 23 years after abusing children years ago. The survivors finally found the courage to come forward and expose his crimes.
Denied All Allegations But Evidence Spoke Louder
Showell denied every accusation when questioned in custody. But police fought hard, gathering evidence and supporting the survivors relentlessly. Their efforts led to charges being filed against him in March last year.
Lengthy Trial Ends With Heavy Sentence
Following a trial at Stafford Crown Court, Showell was sentenced on 7 May to 23 years and five months behind bars. He was convicted of multiple horrific offences, including:
- Two counts of rape of a boy
- Four counts of sexual assault of a child
- Five counts of causing/inciting a child to engage in sexual activity
- One count of causing a child to watch sexual images
- One count of engaging in sexual activity with a child
- One count of attempted sexual activity with a child
He has also been placed on the Sex Offender’s Register for life.
Detective Praises Survivors’ Bravery
“This result would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the tremendous courage and bravery of the survivors in coming forward and telling us what Showell had done,” said Detective Constable Gemma Szalapski from the Rape and Serious Sexual Assault unit.
“We want to send a clear message to survivors that you will be listened to and supported, no matter how long ago the offences may have been. Our specialist teams can support you, gather the evidence and bring those responsible for these acts to justice.”
