A Bradford man believed dead after vanishing in 2020 stunned police by turning up alive at a local station — just two days after five people were arrested on suspicion of his murder.

Ismail Ali’s Disappearance Sparks Murder Probe

Ismail Ali, 51, disappeared aged 46 after leaving his shop on May 29, 2020. The shopkeeper vanished after finishing his shift at Gulam Food Stores in Lidget Green, sparking a huge missing person investigation that escalated to a murder inquiry in November 2025.

West Yorkshire Police arrested three women and two men on November 17, following what they called “extensive enquiries.” Officers raided multiple addresses, seizing a large amount of cash and claiming they suspected Ali had been murdered.

“We now suspect that Ismail Ali is no longer alive and may have been murdered,” Detective Inspector Tom Hilyer told reporters. “Any information could be key to getting answers about his disappearance.”

Shock Twist as Ali Turns Up ‘Safe and Well’

Just two days later, in a dramatic U-turn, Ali voluntarily walked into a Bradford police station, saying he was safe and well. This stunning development quashed the murder investigation and left police baffled over why he had stayed missing for five years.

West Yorkshire Police said on November 20:

“Detectives can confirm Ismail Ali turned up at a police station yesterday reporting to be safe and well. Officers are working to understand the full circumstances surrounding his disappearance.”

Ali’s family, who feared the worst for years, have been notified and are reportedly “overjoyed” by his safe return, though they have not spoken publicly.

Money Laundering Arrests Unrelated but Intriguing

The five suspects arrested remain on bail for money laundering offenses unrelated to Ali’s disappearance. The seized cash is believed connected to financial crimes, not the missing shopkeeper’s case.

Police continue investigating the money laundering separately, while also interviewing Ali about his lost years. So far, Ali has declined to explain where he was or why he stayed away.

The Big Questions Remain

  • Why did Ali disappear for five whole years?
  • Did he face threats, mental health issues, or other pressures?
  • What triggered his sudden return after so long?

Authorities have labeled the case a “non-suspicious disappearance” but admit many mysteries remain.

Social media erupted with relief after the news, calling Ali’s safe return a “miracle.” This ending contrasts sharply with the grim murder scenario police pursued just days earlier.

West Yorkshire Police thanked the public for their tips, which helped build momentum for the case.

The investigation continues with a focus on understanding Ali’s vanished years while safeguarding his welfare. The community watches closely as this Bradford mystery unfolds — proving even cold cases can have shocking, unexpected endings.
