Chaos erupted in Chingford Mount at dawn today as a fierce fire ripped through the Subway sandwich shop on Hall Lane. Thick, choking smoke shot into the sky just after 7am, sparking a huge emergency response and shutting down the area.
Transport Chaos and Shops Shut
- Bus routes 158, 385, 444, and W16 were swiftly diverted to avoid the scorching smoke and flames.
- The nearby Sainsbury’s supermarket slammed its doors amid the worsening havoc.
- Hall Lane remains closed off between Old Church Road and Tufton Road, with police cordons tightly in place.
Firefighters Battle Fierce Flames as Air Ambulance Touches Down
A dramatic showdown unfolded with ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters swarming the burning shop. Flames still rage on the ground floor, first floor, and roof, with serious damage including a partially collapsed internal staircase and roof destruction.
An air ambulance landed nearby while crews fought the stubborn blaze, bringing this usually quiet high street to a grinding halt.
Thankfully, one woman and a child managed to escape before firefighters arrived. Both were rushed to hospital in London Ambulance Service vehicles.
Investigation Underway – Locals Urged to Stay Clear
The London Fire Brigade received the first call at 11:35am, quickly deploying teams from Walthamstow, Chingford, Tottenham, and surrounding stations.
The cause of the fire remains a mystery. With roads still closed and heavy traffic chaos ongoing, authorities are warning the public to stay well clear of the scene for their own safety.
