A burglar who preyed on the home of an elderly woman in Salisbury, making off with £80,000 worth of personal items, has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
Edy Hernandez, aged 29 and residing on Wilton Avenue, Southampton, admitted to burglary and theft charges during his appearance at Southampton Crown Court on Friday, April 19.
The incident occurred on the night of October 5, 2023, when Hernandez forcibly entered the residence of a woman in her 70s while she was absent for the night. Gaining access through an upstairs window, he proceeded to pilfer various valuables, including a flat-screen television, a tablet, numerous suitcases, distinctive bottles of alcohol, and an array of jewellery consisting of diamond rings, earrings, broaches, pendants, pearl chains, a ruby ring, and Georgian drop diamond earrings.
Upon the victim’s return the following day, she was met with the distressing sight of her home ransacked and her cherished possessions vanished.
Wiltshire Police’s Burglary Team launched an extensive investigation, leading to Hernandez’s arrest the subsequent month. Some of the stolen items were recovered from his residence in Southampton.
Detective Sergeant Ted Roe condemned Hernandez’s actions, emphasizing the intrusive nature of burglary and its profound impact on victims. He affirmed the force’s unwavering commitment to apprehending offenders and bringing them to justice.
In a poignant statement, the victim conveyed the profound emotional toll wrought by the burglary, describing feelings of horror, heartbreak, and vulnerability. She expressed gratitude to the police for their support throughout the ordeal, acknowledging their pivotal role in providing assistance and closure.
