Former England rugby player Tom Voyce, 43, is feared to have died after his car was swept into the River Aln in Northumberland.
Incident Details
Northumbria Police reported that Mr. Voyce, who represented clubs including Bath and London Wasps, was last seen on Saturday evening after spending time with friends. Concerns were raised on Sunday morning when he failed to return home.
Investigators believe Mr. Voyce attempted to cross Abberwick Ford, located about three miles from Alnwick. His car was carried downstream by the river’s strong current.
While police have since recovered the vehicle, Mr. Voyce himself has not been found. It is believed he was swept away while attempting to escape the car.
Police Statement
Chief Superintendent Helena Barron described the situation as a “tragic incident” and extended condolences to Mr. Voyce’s family:
“This is an extremely tragic incident, and our thoughts are very much with Tom’s loved ones at this time.
“Our officers continue to support his family, and we would ask that their privacy is respected. Extensive inquiries have been ongoing since concerns were raised for Tom, including deploying specialist teams to search for him.”

Specialist teams have been deployed to the area, with searches continuing in and around the River Aln. However, hopes of finding Mr. Voyce alive are diminishing.
