M2 Lorry Fire Updates: Two Injured, Firefighters Conclude Operation

Firefighting operations at the scene of a lorry fire on the M2, between junction 2 and 3 (London-bound), have successfully concluded, according to an update at 1:35 AM on October 26, 2023. The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday, October 25, prompted extensive emergency response efforts.

Two individuals involved in the incident sustained burns to their hands and smoke inhalation. South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) provided immediate care to the injured parties. In addition to SECAmb, Kent Police and Network Rail were on-site to manage the situation.

The coast-bound side of the motorway has been reopened to traffic, and residents living or travelling near the area are no longer advised to keep windows and doors closed.

An earlier update at 10:25 PM on October 25 confirmed that firefighters were working diligently to make the scene safe. Two fire engines and a bulk water carrier remained on the scene for several hours. At that time, the road remained closed in both directions, and the precautionary advice to keep windows and doors closed remained in effect.

The initial update, issued during the incident, advised residents or travellers near junctions 2 and 3 of the M2 (near Chatham and Rochester) to close windows and doors due to smoke emanating from the lorry fire. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, promptly responded to extinguish the fire.

The prompt response from emergency services and the successful conclusion of firefighting operations underline the importance of coordinated efforts in managing such incidents on major roadways. Authorities have expressed their gratitude to the public for their cooperation and understanding during the incident.
