NHS Blood and Transplant is issuing an urgent appeal for blood donors in South London, with hundreds of appointments unfilled at Brixton Donor Centre due to a donation shortfall caused by recent bank holidays and the half-term break.
More than 1,000 donation slots are available each week at the Brixton site — and NHS officials warn that unless more people come forward, vital blood stocks could fall below safe levels.
Bank Holidays and Half-Term Trigger Drop in Blood Supply
The NHS says the spike in holidays has led to a “spring slump” in donations, placing pressure on hospitals and patient care across the UK.
“The need for blood never stops,” said Gerry Gogarty, Director of Blood Supply at NHS Blood and Transplant.
“To avoid falling behind, we urgently need new and returning donors to book appointments today and in the coming weeks.”
Brixton Donor Centre: Help Save Lives in Your Community
The Brixton Donor Centre, which opened in December 2024, is a major hub for South London blood donations. Since opening, the centre has recorded a 7% collection rate for the rare Ro blood subtype, a figure well above the 2% national average.
“Each blood donation can save up to three lives,” said Rexford Osei-Bonsu, Manager of Brixton Donor Centre.
“We’re proud of our donors, but we urgently need more people to step up following the bank holiday dip.”
Urgent Call for Black Heritage Donors
There is a critical need for donors of Black heritage, who are 10 times more likely to have the Ro blood type used to treat sickle cell disease – the UK’s fastest-growing inherited blood disorder, primarily affecting Black communities.
The NHS must collect blood from around 1,300 Black donors every month to meet growing demand for transfusions.
Blood Types in High Demand
People with O negative, O positive, and A positive blood types are also urged to donate as these are most frequently used in:
