In the ongoing trial regarding the tragic death of Kai McGinley, a forensic pathologist provided critical evidence, revealing that the 24-year-old’s demise was a result of a gunshot wound to his back.
Kai McGinley lost his life on Pembroke Road after sustaining a fatal gunshot wound. The trial, which resumed on Tuesday (February 13), had experienced a brief hiatus due to unforeseen circumstances. Lead counsel Robert Woodcock KC, representing defendant Jalees Selby-Gangera, passed away, necessitating a pause in proceedings. Subsequently, Sally O’Neill KC took over as lead counsel for Selby-Gangera, and the trial was set to reconvene, but was further delayed by a court evacuation prompted by a fire alarm.
As the trial resumed, forensic pathologist Dr Matthew Cieka took the stand to present his findings from Kai McGinley’s post-mortem examination. Dr Cieka revealed that the primary cause of Kai’s death was attributed to a gunshot wound inflicted on the left side of his back. The examination also indicated that the use of a shotgun was likely based on the pellets found in Kai’s body, some of which had penetrated his lungs. Dr. Cieka further explained that the resulting haemorrhage and pneumothorax led to cardiac arrest, ultimately claiming Kai’s life.
Prosecutor Brian O’Neill KC had previously characterized Kai’s death as a premeditated and targeted attack, likely linked to drug-related activities. According to O’Neill, Kai was travelling with friends in a stolen vehicle when they were ambushed by assailants in a Land Rover. The assailants opened fire, with the fatal shot being fired at close range from a shotgun, resulting in Kai’s tragic demise.
Seven individuals from southeast London stand accused in connection with Kai McGinley’s murder and the attempted murder of his companions, Bill Burton and Norman Samura. The defendants include Enriko Spahui, Jalees Selby-Gangera, Connor Brooks, Bradlee Reeve, Kai Osibodu, Charlie Brabon, and Anthony Wallder. All defendants deny the charges against them.
