A shocking incident at Wetherby Young Offender Institution has sparked a security alert after a teenage rapist used a spoon to tunnel into a neighbouring cell and attack another criminal.
The convicted rapist reportedly utilized a sharpened spoon to break through the wall and launch a vicious assault on a convicted murderer, inflicting serious injuries. The incident in the segregation unit has prompted an immediate investigation by institution authorities in West Yorkshire.
According to prison sources the breach is being treated as a major security lapse, raising concerns about how the assailant managed to penetrate the wall without detection. Questions are being raised about the responsiveness of the institution’s security measures, as the disturbance went unnoticed until after the attack had taken place.
Governors are reportedly scrutinizing guards about the oversight, particularly regarding why the disturbance was not detected sooner given its allegedly noisy nature.
In response to inquiries about the incident, the Youth Custody Service issued a statement, indicating that anyone found responsible for violence would face consequences.
This incident comes on the heels of a recent report that uncovered troubling practices at the institution. Last month, it was revealed that an adult male officer forcibly strip-searched a vulnerable teenage girl, prompting deep shock and condemnation from the prison watchdog. Carlie Taylor, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, criticized the inappropriate use of pain-inducing techniques and highlighted concerns about the treatment of inmates at the facility.
At the time of the inspection, the institution housed 165 boys and girls aged 15 to 18, including some of the country’s most challenging young offenders. The latest security breach underscores the urgent need for robust measures to ensure the safety and security of both staff and inmates within the facility.
