Trial Resumes in Kai McGinley Murder Case Following Unexpected Delays

The trial of seven men accused of the murder of Kai McGinley in Erith has resumed after an unexpected hiatus caused by the tragic death of a barrister and a fire incident at the Old Bailey.

The proceedings were abruptly halted on Tuesday, January 30, following the passing of Robert Woodcock KC, the lead counsel for defendant Jalees Selby-Gangera. Woodcock’s untimely demise prompted a temporary suspension of the trial, as the legal team mourned the loss of their esteemed colleague.

Gillian Jones KC and Tom Forster KC, heads of Red Lion Chambers, expressed their condolences, remembering Woodcock as not only an exceptional advocate but also a beloved friend and colleague.

With Sally O’Neill KC stepping in as leading counsel for Selby-Gangera, preparations were made to resume the trial on Wednesday, February 7. However, the proceedings faced another setback when the Old Bailey was evacuated due to a fire caused by an electrical substation malfunction. The disruption further delayed the trial, forcing it to adjourn until the building’s safety could be ensured.

Although the Old Bailey reopened on Monday, February 12, unforeseen circumstances arose as a juror fell ill, necessitating a further delay in the trial’s resumption.

The trial is set to recommence today, Tuesday, February 13, with a forensic pathologist expected to provide testimony regarding the circumstances surrounding Kai McGinley’s death.

Prosecutor Brian O’Neill KC has informed the jury that McGinley, 24, was the victim of a “planned and targeted execution,” likely linked to drug-related activities. McGinley was fatally shot while in a stolen vehicle, which had been forced off the road by a Land Rover. The assailants, armed with shotguns, opened fire on McGinley and his companions before fleeing the scene.

The seven defendants—Enriko Spahui, Jalees Selby-Gangera, Connor Brooks, Bradlee Reeve, Kai Osibodu, Charlie Brabon, and Anthony Wallder—are jointly charged with murder and attempted murder. All defendants deny the allegations against them.

As the trial continues, the court remains focused on uncovering the truth behind the tragic events of Kai McGinley’s death, with justice for the victim and accountability for the accused at the forefront of legal proceedings.
