Two men have been found guilty in connection with the fatal stabbing of Trei Daley, a 26-year-old resident of Bromley. The incident occurred near Colour Factory nightclub in Queen’s Yard, Hackney Wick, during the early morning hours of February 11, 2023.
Christopher Appiah-Blay, aged 35 and a resident of Hackney, was convicted of manslaughter in the case. Additionally, Mawien Mawien, aged 38 and residing in Romford, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm stemming from the same incident.
The sentencing for both men will be determined at a later date, as announced by the authorities.
Detective Inspector Jim Barry, who led the investigation, commented on the case, stating, “This is yet another example of the devastation caused by carrying and using a knife.” He added that the incident unfolded following an altercation at a takeaway restaurant near Colour Factory nightclub.
The altercation initially involved Appiah-Blay and a woman, which escalated when he became aggressive and threw food at her. Trei Daley and his friends intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
However, instead of resolving the dispute peacefully, Appiah-Blay and Mawien Mawien, who were both armed with knives, resorted to violence and attacked Trei and his friend. Tragically, Trei Daley and his friend were unarmed during the confrontation.
The police investigation uncovered crucial CCTV footage capturing the entire incident. Although the footage showed Trei striking another individual first, it also revealed Appiah-Blay and Mawien drawing knives and engaging in the altercation.
The violent encounter shifted locations, eventually moving to an alleyway. During the fight, one of Trei’s friends struck Appiah-Blay with a bottle, further intensifying the confrontation.
Ultimately, the confrontation spilled back onto the road, where Mawien stabbed Trei’s friend in the back, and Appiah-Blay delivered two fatal stabs to Trei’s chest.
Trei Daley was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His friend, aged 24, survived after receiving medical treatment for stab wounds to his back.
Both Appiah-Blay and Mawien were subsequently arrested and charged with murder. Authorities discovered a receipt in Appiah-Blay’s home that was dated the morning of the incident, further corroborating the sequence of events.
Detective Inspector Jim Barry expressed condolences to Trei Daley’s loved ones, acknowledging the profound loss they have experienced. Trei was remembered as a loving father, son, brother, cousin, and friend to many.
