Man Jailed for Pointing Gun at Bailiffs and Police in SE4 Stand-Off

Richard Todd, 52, of Foxberry Road SE4, has been locked up for five years after threatening bailiffs with a firearm and later pointing the gun at police officers. Woolwich Crown Court sentenced him on Monday, 19 December.

Terrifying Standoff with Bailiffs and Armed Police

On 16 November, two county court bailiffs arrived at Todd’s home to carry out a property repossession. Todd confronted them brandishing a handgun, forcing the bailiffs to flee and alert the police. When armed officers arrived, Todd escalated the situation by pointing the gun directly at them.

After a nerve-wracking 20-minute standoff, Todd surrendered and was swiftly arrested. A search of his home uncovered additional ammunition, including 25 bullets, 24 shotgun shells, and a bulletproof vest.

Converted Lethal Firearm Found

Forensic tests revealed the weapon Todd wielded was a revolver-style air pistol converted into a fully functioning lethal gun, loaded with six rounds. Todd had pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear, possession of a prohibited weapon, and possession of ammunition without a certificate.

Police Praise Officers’ Bravery and Professionalism

“No one expects to have a gun pointed at them whilst they’re going about their job. This must have been a truly terrifying experience for the two bailiffs,” said Detective Constable Theo from the South East Command Unit.

“I also want to praise the Firearms Command officers who responded that day. Their calm and professional handling of the gunman prevented a far worse outcome.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Donna Smith added, “This incident shows the bravery and skill of our firearms officers. In the last year, they have managed roughly 4,000 spontaneous firearms incidents, using communication to safely resolve dangerous situations.”

Todd remains in custody, facing a lengthy prison term for the terrifying ordeal. The case underlines the dangers bailiffs and officers face daily while keeping the public safe.
