Pervert Sentenced After 29 Years for Maidstone Indecent Assault
Victim Speaks Out Decades Later
Mohammad Afzal, then in his 30s, tried to befriend his victim before committing a vile indecent assault in Maidstone back in October 1993. The shocking crime only came to light when the victim bravely reported it to Kent Police in April 2019, sparking an investigation that finally brought Afzal to justice.
Arrest and Conviction
Afzal, from Church Road, Sheldon, Birmingham, was arrested later in 2019 and charged with indecent assault. Despite his denial, a Maidstone Crown Court jury found him guilty. He was sentenced on Friday, 6th May 2022.
Detective’s Message to Victims
“Kent Police takes all reports of sexual offences very seriously, no matter how much time has passed. Such offences never leave victims, who show tremendous courage speaking out,” said Detective Constable Dan Williams.
“Mohammad Afzal’s crime was dreadful. I hope his prison sentence sends a clear message to victims: you will be heard, believed, and we will relentlessly pursue justice.”
