Tom Carney, 29, kicked in the door of David Phillips before attacking him in the property, stamping on his head and body multiple times resulting in David Phillips’ death. The jury heard how multiple facial fractures had been caused by stamping, as well as fractures to the sternum, ribs and thoracic vertebrae. They also heard evidence that a stereo in the property had blood stains on it indicating it had been used as a weapon. Emma Myles of the CPS said: “Tom Carney admitted he was responsible for the death of David Phillips but denied any intention to kill him or cause serious harm. However, the evidence of this shockingly violent attack suggested otherwise. “We are grateful to the witnesses who came forward and gave evidence in this case, allowing the CPS to deliver justice for Mr Phillips.” Carney was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve a minimum of fifteen years and ten days.
