Brighton Man Caught Dumping Rubbish on CCTV
Mark Bott, 36, from Brighton, has been caught red-handed fly-tipping at two locations in the city. CCTV footage reveals Bott offloading construction waste and household rubbish at High Park Farm, Ditchling Road, and Denton Drive, Hollingbury.
At Brighton Magistrates, Bott pleaded guilty to the offences. He was handed a 12-month community order, avoiding jail, but ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
Caught in the Act: CCTV Shows Shocking Scene
Video clips show Bott reversing a tipper truck down a muddy farm path. In a bizarre twist, he throws bush branches into his truck, then glances up at the CCTV camera while his obscured number plate is visible.
He then unloads garbage including a child’s push bike and household doors onto the ground before driving off with his trailer tailgate still up. The dump was blatant and careless.
Environmental enforcement officers and Sussex Police identified Bott’s unique vehicle from the footage, leading to his arrest.
Financial Woes Won’t Stop Justice
Under caution at Cityclean’s Hollingdean depot, Bott admitted to both fly-tips. At court, he claimed his financial situation meant he could only pay a small fine, so magistrates gave him a community order instead. His lorry is now impounded.
“Fly-tipping is a very serious offence. It damages the environment and is harmful to wildlife,” said Max Smith, the council’s environmental enforcement manager.
“It costs the council large sums to clear up, money that could be used to improve the city. Our new mobile CCTV and number plate recognition cameras are catching offenders fast. Since October, we’ve nabbed nearly 70 fly-tippers.”
Other Recent Fly-Tipping Convictions
- Patricia Twomey, 63, fined £3,271 after dumping rubbish on her own street.
- Kudakwashe Madzivanyika, 36, fined £2,631 for dumping business waste at Sainsbury’s Recycling Point in West Hove.
- Alice Revel, fined £3,631 for fly-tipping commercial waste on Osbourne Villas.
All three failed to pay their £300 Fixed Penalty Notices within 28 days and were taken to court. These stiff fines show the council’s zero tolerance for illegal dumping.
