Convicted Sex Offender Jailed for Attempted Child Abuse Following NCA Investigation

John Harrison, a 74-year-old man from Tipton in the Midlands, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after attempting to meet a 14-year-old boy to abuse him. The National Crime Agency (NCA) conducted an extensive investigation that led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.

Background

NCA officers initiated the investigation after identifying that Harrison was exchanging indecent images of children on a social media platform. In February 2021, he was arrested, and several devices were seized during the operation. However, new intelligence revealed that Harrison was reoffending, this time engaging with a 14-year-old boy on the same platform.

Disturbing Evidence

During their investigation, officers discovered messages indicating that Harrison was attempting to arrange sexual activity with the child. Additionally, indecent images of children falling into categories A to C were found on his devices. The investigators cataloged 482 Category A images, 960 Category B images, and 2330 Category C images.

Repeat Offender

Harrison faced charges related to making indecent images of children, possession of prohibited or extreme images, and arranging sexual activity with a child. He pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court in March 2023. On June 26, 2024, he received a 30-month prison sentence.

Prior Conviction

Notably, Harrison was already on the sex offenders register due to a 2014 conviction for making and possessing indecent images of children.

NCA’s Commitment

Danielle Pownall, Operations Manager at the NCA, emphasized the agency’s commitment to protecting children: “John Harrison is a prolific offender, pursuing contact with children and continuing his offending even after he had been arrested. The images Harrison had been viewing and swapping with others all contain a vulnerable child who has been abused by criminals like him. The NCA is dedicated to ensuring that those who seek this material are brought to justice.”
