Ex-Teaching Assistant Jailed for 8 Years Over Abuse of 10-Year-Old Boy
Denise Povall Sentenced for Child Sex Abuse
Denise Povall, once a primary school teaching assistant in Harrogate, has been locked up for eight years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy during the 2000s. The victim, now grown, showed immense bravery by coming forward, prompting an extensive probe by North Yorkshire Police.
Grooming and Abuse Uncovered
Povall carried out a twisted, “evil and sustained” campaign of sexual exploitation. She groomed the youngster, showering him with gifts and sending inappropriate texts. The abuse escalated to sexual intercourse and multiple sex acts. Despite solid evidence, Povall denied all allegations during police interviews.
Strong Case Leads to Conviction
North Yorkshire Police’s Non-Recent Abuse Investigation Team charged Povall with grooming, inciting and engaging in sexual activity with a child, and sexual assault by touching. A York Crown Court jury found her guilty on every count. The judge ordered her to sign the sex offenders’ register once released.
Police Urge Victims to Speak Out
Detective Constable Alison Morris, who led the investigation, welcomed the conviction and highlighted that women can commit such crimes, busting common myths. She urged all survivors of sexual assault—no matter when it happened—to come forward for support. Specialist officers and agencies are ready to help.
