An officer who engaged in inappropriate behaviour by touching a female colleague while on duty has been dismissed from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) after a thorough investigation conducted by the Met’s professional standards unit.
PC Rafiqur Rahman, assigned to the policing team covering Newham and Waltham Forest, faced allegations that his actions breached the standards of discreditable conduct at a misconduct hearing concluded on Monday, 12 February.
Chief Superintendent Simon Crick, responsible for policing in the affected boroughs, expressed his dismay at the incident, stating, “All of my officers are expected to behave with the utmost integrity, both towards the public and towards their colleagues. I’m sickened that my officer was assaulted in this way, and we are taking steps to ensure her continued welfare. Rahman has no place in the Met or policing and has now been rightly dismissed.
The Directorate of Professional Standards initiated an investigation after the officer reported in June 2022 that Rahman had inappropriately touched her while on shift together in February 2021. Additionally, during a subsequent shift, Rahman sent her an inappropriate message in response to a separate matter.
During the investigation, Rahman was placed on restricted duties. Following the conclusion of the proceedings, the panel found the allegations against him proven at the level of gross misconduct.
As a result of his dismissal, Rahman will be added to the Barred List held by the College of Policing, which prohibits individuals on the list from employment by police, local policing bodies (PCCs), the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
