A serial thief who brazenly stole from unsuspecting victims as they dined in restaurants has been jailed for more than four years.
Jane Kariuki, 47, admitted to seven counts of theft, targeting customers — predominantly women — by stealing items from their handbags while they enjoyed meals.
She was eventually caught following a targeted police investigation, after multiple victims came forward to report similar incidents. CCTV footage and witness testimonies linked Kariuki to a string of thefts in the area.

During sentencing, the judge condemned her for preying on people in social settings where they felt safe and relaxed, stating her actions showed “a clear pattern of calculated and opportunistic criminal behaviour.”
Kariuki was handed a prison sentence of four years and three months, bringing relief to victims and reassurance to local restaurant-goers.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “This sentence reflects the serious impact of her offences. She deliberately targeted people who were simply out enjoying a meal, and we hope this brings closure to those affected.”
Police are continuing to urge the public to remain vigilant when dining out and to keep personal belongings secure.
Anyone who suspects they may have been a victim of similar thefts is encouraged to contact local police.
