Serial handbag thief jailed for over four years after targeting diners
Brazen thief strikes in restaurants
Jane Kariuki, 47, has been locked up for four years and three months after admitting seven counts of theft. The serial criminal targeted diners, mostly women, snatching valuables from their handbags while they relaxed over meals.
Crime spree across Peterborough and Westgate
Kariuki launched her crime spree at The Bull Hotel in Westgate on August 16 last year, darting off with a victim’s belongings at 1:15pm. Four of her thefts happened in Peterborough alone. Using slick distraction tactics, she blended into busy restaurants then quietly helped herself to wallets and phones without raising suspicion.
Caught on CCTV and named by witnesses
After several victims came forward, police zeroed in on Kariuki. CCTV footage and witness accounts tied her to multiple incidents. During sentencing, the judge slammed her cold, calculated approach, saying she preyed on people where they should’ve felt safe.
Police warn diners to stay alert
A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: “This sentence reflects the serious impact of her offences. She deliberately targeted people out enjoying a meal, and we hope this brings closure to victims.” The force urges the public to stay vigilant and secure belongings when dining out.
