Love Scam Alert: Kent Victims Lose Over £3 Million to Heartless Fraudsters

Kent Police have issued a stark warning after romance fraud ripped off locals for more than £3 million last year. Among the victims is a Swale woman who lost nearly £100,000 – and even her home – to shameless scammers.

Heartbreaking Scam Strips Woman of House and Savings

In a chilling case, a Swale resident was conned by a fake American serviceman posing on social media during a vulnerable time of grief. Over months, the fraudster won her trust and convinced her they were in a relationship.

She was duped into sending cash via gift cards for bogus food and medical expenses. The pressure forced her to hand over her house and sink deep into debt. When she tried to pull back, shadowy blackmailers threatened to expose her private info. An impostor FBI agent even joined the twisted game, promising help but demanding more money.

Kent Police only stepped in after a bank’s red flags went up in May 2025. No arrests have been made yet and the money remains missing, but police did recover a family heirloom the victim had pawned to stay afloat.

Police Sound the Alarm

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Smithers said:

“Romance fraud is a particularly cruel offence. Victims are emotionally manipulated into believing they’ve found love, when in reality they’re being exploited for money.”

“Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person or don’t fully trust. If you have doubts, speak to a friend or relative — if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Spot the Signs and Shield Yourself

  • Be suspicious of anyone asking for money — even small amounts or via gift cards.
  • Never share your bank details, ID, or personal info.
  • Don’t send money or take out loans for people you’ve never met.
  • Check profile photos with reverse image search tools – perfect pictures may be fakes.
  • Fraudsters try to isolate you emotionally – always talk about new romances with friends or family.
  • Refuse to handle parcels for strangers.

Join the Fight: National Campaign Launches

Kent Police are backing a nationwide drive this week to raise awareness of romance scams. The campaign aims to help people spot warning signs and protect vulnerable victims.

If you suspect you or someone you know is a target, report it immediately to Action Fraud or call 101.
