Ten-Storey Hotel Collapses in Argentina: Rescue Underway
A ten-storey hotel building has dramatically collapsed in Villa Gesell, Buenos Aires province, sparking a massive rescue mission. Authorities believe several people remain trapped under the debris.
Rescuers Race Against Time
The incident occurred early Tuesday at the Hotel Dubrovnik. Officials say between seven and nine people, including construction workers allegedly working without proper permits, were inside when the building gave way.
Over 300 firefighters, police, and rescue teams have been on site for more than eight hours, frantically clearing rubble in hopes of finding survivors. So far, an elderly woman has been rescued alive, but an 80-year-old man was confirmed dead, said provincial security minister Javier Alonso.
No Guests, Only Workers Inside
“There were no guests in the hotel at the time,” Mr Alonso confirmed. The building, originally built in 1986, was undergoing construction in a separate wing when the collapse happened.
The collapse has left a neighboring building at risk. City mayor Gustavo Barrera warned more evacuations might be necessary as a precaution.
Illegal Work Cited, Four Arrested
The municipality had stopped construction work at the hotel back in August over missing permits. Authorities have since arrested four people in connection with the tragedy. An official investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow as rescue efforts continue.
