Fake Police Scams Targeting Bank Customers Across UK
Scam callers pretending to be police officers are tricking people into handing over huge sums of cash. They claim the victims’ bank accounts are under attack and urge them to withdraw money for “inspection.” Then, a fake officer sends a courier to snatch the cash from the street.
Relatives in Custody Ruse
Other scammers say they’re police from outside South Yorkshire. They warn victims about a relative arrested and demand cash or bank access to “help” that relative.
Victims are told to withdraw cash, transfer funds to a “safe account,” or hand over money to the bogus police. The crooks even instruct them to lie to bank staff, claiming the money is for a family member.
South Yorkshire Police Warn: Don’t Fall for It!
“These calls are not genuine, and police officers will never ask you for personal banking information over the phone, or ask you to withdraw cash. Our officers, and officers from forces across the country, will never call you and ask for personal details in this way.”
The police urge anyone suspicious of such calls to hang up immediately. Then, call 101 from a different phone or get a trusted friend or relative to verify the call. If no other phone is available, wait at least 30 minutes before calling back — fraudsters may keep the line open to trick you.
