Two teenagers have been sentenced for attacks on members of the public and a police officer in Margate

Ethan Broderick-Porter repeatedly kicked one victim in the head, punched another, and hit a third in the head. As he was being arrested, he kicked a police officer in the head.

On Wednesday, June 29, 2022, the 19-year-old of Northdown Road, Cliftonville, was sentenced to 23 months in prison at Canterbury Crown Court after admitting to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault, and assaulting an emergency worker.

Charlie Parker, 18, of Victoria Road, Margate, who was involved in the first attack, was sentenced to ten months in a Young Offenders’ Institution.

The assaults all occurred on the evening of Friday, January 14, 2022, in Margate town centre, while Broderick-Porter, Parker, and a group of teenagers were there.

Broderick-Porter dragged the first victim, a man in his 60s, to the ground in Queen Street. He and Parker then kicked the man in the head and back, injuring him severely.

The pair then left the scene, but Broderick-Porter later returned to Queen Street and punched another man walking down the street, causing a cut to the man’s face.

Broderick-Porter then punched a third man at least three times, cutting the victim’s face again.

While a crowd gathered around them, officers arrived and arrested Broderick-Porter. He kicked one of the officers in the face as officers attempted to get him into a police car, causing facial injuries. Parker was identified on surveillance video and arrested a week later.

The motivation for these assaults has not been explained beyond these two offenders’ wishes for violence,’ said Thanet District Commander Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Smith. In this case, the victims were simply going about their business when they were attacked without warning.

‘Residents and visitors to Margate should not have to put up with violent, nuisance teenagers like these two offenders, and I am relieved that they have both been removed from the streets.’

‘I would like to commend the bravery of the officers who arrested Broderick-Porter despite his actions toward them, and I am pleased that a quick investigation has resulted in a quick conclusion of this case at court,’ said the judge.
