NHS Prescription Charges for 2024: What You Need to Know

The National Health Service (Charges for Drugs and Appliances) (Amendment) Regulations 2024 were recently laid before Parliament, bringing significant changes to NHS prescription charges in England. Here’s a breakdown of the key updates

Prescription Charges and Prepayment Certificates (PPCs)

Starting from May 1, 2024, prescription charges and prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) will see an increase of 2.59% (rounded to the nearest 5 pence). This adjustment affects the cost of essential medications and appliances dispensed through the NHS.

  1. Single Prescription Charge: The cost of a single prescription will rise to £9.90, reflecting an increase of 25 pence.
  2. 3-Month PPC: Patients opting for a 3-month PPC will pay £32.05, an increase of 80 pence.
  3. 12-Month PPC: The annual 12-month PPC will now cost £114.50, representing a £2.90 increase.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) PPC

The HRT PPC, designed for patients undergoing hormone replacement therapy, will be priced at £19.80, reflecting 50 pence increase. Notably, this rate is set at twice the single prescription charge.

Additional Charges

Beyond prescriptions, other medical necessities will also experience adjustments:

  • Surgical Bra: The cost of a surgical bra will rise to £32.50, an increase of 80 pence.
  • Abdominal or Spinal Support: Patients requiring abdominal or spinal support will pay £49.05, reflecting a £1.25 increase.
  • Stock Acrylic Wig: The price for a stock acrylic wig will be £80.15, an increase of £2.00.
  • Partial Human Hair Wig: Those opting for a partial human hair wig will pay £212.35, representing a £5.35 increase.
  • Full Bespoke Human Hair Wig: Patients choosing a full bespoke human hair wig will now pay £310.55, reflecting a £7.85 increase.

Financial Assistance

If you’re concerned about the impact of these changes on your budget, explore available financial assistance options. The NHS provides support to eligible individuals to help cover healthcare costs. Check with your local NHS office to determine what assistance you may qualify for.

Remember, these new charges take effect from May 1, 2024, so be prepared for the updated costs when obtaining your prescriptions and medical supplies through the NHS. Stay informed and prioritise your health and well-being.
