Top Cop Simon Harding Named Senior Investigating Officer of the Year!
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding from Putney has snatched the coveted Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) of the Year award. The NPCC Homicide Working Group honoured him for his outstanding work in major crime and homicide investigations across the UK.
Storming Success at New Scotland Yard
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy, chair of the NPCC Homicide Working Group, presented Simon with the award at New Scotland Yard. The accolade recognises his professionalism and exceptional leadership in handling complex murder inquiries.
With almost 30 years on the beat, Simon’s career reads like a crime thriller. He’s worked in borough teams, a specialist cold case rape unit, the Counter-Terrorism Command, and climbed ranks within homicide squads. A true all-rounder.
Leading High-Profile and Chilling Cases
- Simon was the UK’s counter-terrorism SIO for the 2015 Tunisian museum attack that killed 22 people.
- He supported investigations into the Tunisian beach terrorist attack at Sousse, where 30 British holidaymakers lost their lives.
- Since joining the Met’s murder team in 2017, he has led or overseen more than 80 murder probes, making him one of Britain’s most experienced SIOs.
- He cracked Operation Needingworth, the double murder of Noel and Marie Brown, using familial DNA—sharing the findings nationally in 2019.
- His leadership in Operation Ridleypark led to the conviction of Zahid Younis, who got 38 years for murdering two women found in a chest freezer, despite no clear cause of death.
- Simon took charge of Operation Saxonstreet in 2020, investigating the tragic stranger murders of sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman—still awaiting trial.
Simon’s Own Words on Winning
“I am truly honoured and humbled to have received this award. To be an SIO in the Met is an honour in itself, but to be a Homicide SIO is the pinnacle. I cherish every minute.” “This success is thanks to a fantastic team of detectives and police staff who pour their heart into every investigation for the families who have lost loved ones.”
