A dramatic rescue unfolded at Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve on 14 March when a person became trapped knee-deep in mud. Selsey Coastguard Team sprang into action after receiving the urgent call at 14:13.
Coastguards and Firefighters Join Forces
The Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were also put on standby to assist. Two expert Coast Guard Rescue Mud Technicians waded onto the mudflats and pulled the trapped individual to safety using a stretcher.
Fortunately, the victim did not need medical treatment and was wrapped in a warm blanket before heading home.

The rescue team expressed their gratitude to a local farmer and the owners of Hasleys Farm for granting access to the tricky terrain.
“If you get stuck in mud along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard,” the team warned. “Don’t attempt a rescue yourself—it can be dangerous. If stuck, stay still and try to spread your weight. Always stick to paths and avoid mudflats.”
