The Northam Bridge was closed in both directions, and drivers were advised to seek alternate routes, but the road has now reopened.
According to a police spokesman: “At 5.56 a.m., police were called to reports of a man’s welfare on Northam Bridge.
“The road was closed while emergency crews responded.
“The road reopened around 8 a.m., and the man was taken to the hospital.”
“Due to an incident on Northam Bridge outbound, we are diverting via Itchen Bridge,” City Red tweeted. We are unable to serve all stops on Bitterne Road West between Northam and Bitterne.”
“Diversions are in place on the 16 and 18 due to police activity,” Bluestar added. Northam Bridge is currently closed outboard.
“We are unable to serve any bus stops between Northam Bridge and Bitterne shops.” We apologise for any inconvenience.”
Southampton Travel had previously tweeted: “Northam Bridge: The bridge is currently closed in both directions due to an incident. The closure begins at the Union Road/Princes Street intersection.
“Emergency services are present. Please find another route.”
