Eurostar Snubs Kent: Trains Still Skipping Ebbsfleet and Ashford
Since March 2020, Eurostar trains have failed to stop at Ebbsfleet or Ashford, leaving Kent passengers stranded. Instead, travellers must slog all the way to St Pancras, doubling back through Kent just to reach the Channel Tunnel.
Kent Council Furious, Demands Answers
Kent County Council leader Roger Gough slammed the ongoing absence of Eurostar stops. The reintroduction has yet to occur,” he said, demanding clearer terms on when Eurostar will consider Kent stops financially viable.
Originally eyeing a 2022 comeback, Eurostar pushed the pause button to 2023 due to plunging passenger numbers and profits. They say a decision won’t be revisited until late this year.
Local Leaders Warn of Knock-On Damage
Ashford Borough Council’s Gerry Clarkson warned the delay poses a “real challenge” for residents, workers, and businesses relying on the vital service.
Green Party councillor Rich Lehmann blasted the extra journeys as a waste. “The swiftest resumption is needed,” he said, pointing out the glaring inefficiency of trains passing through Kent without stopping.
Eurostar’s Cold Shoulder to Kent
Despite talks between Eurostar, Kent County Council, and Ashford Borough Council, the message remains clear: “It is a no from us!”
A Eurostar spokesperson showed little sympathy for frustrated Kent passengers: “Kent services will not resume this year. We’ve said 2023 is the earliest, and we’ll revisit the decision near year-end.”
The wait goes on, and Kent commuters are left wondering how long this rail snub will last.
