Passenger dragged 60m on train platform after hand caught in closing doors

A passenger suffered minor injuries after being dragged along Enfield Town Overground station platform when their hand got trapped in a train door. The harrowing incident happened on the evening of July 17 on a London Liverpool Street-bound train operated by Arriva Rail London for TfL.

How the drama unfolded

  • The passenger rushed to board as the doors were closing, wedging their hand between them.
  • The driver, unaware, closed doors and pulled away from the platform.
  • The trapped passenger ran alongside the train before falling and being dragged 60 metres at speeds up to 11 mph.
  • Fellow passengers triggered the emergency door release handles, alerting the driver to stop.

Safety system shortcomings exposed

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) revealed that the train’s obstacle detection system did not register the passenger’s hand, as objects thinner than 30mm (like fingers) are often missed. The driver had checked CCTV monitors before closing the doors but did not see the passenger at that moment.

The passenger escaped with minor physical injuries but now suffers psychological distress following the ordeal.

TfL and Arriva respond with new safety measures

“We’re sorry that our customer experienced this distressing incident. Safety is our top priority, and we have fully co-operated with the RAIB’s investigation.” – Rory O’Neill, TfL London Overground General Manager

Arriva Rail London launched its own probe and rolled out refresher briefings for drivers plus passenger awareness campaigns. Videos warning against obstructing closing doors are now shared widely across social media and station screens.

This chilling episode highlights the dangers of trying to board trains after doors begin to shut. Always wait for the next train and stay safe.
