Virgin Galactic Gears Up for Star-Studded Spaceflight

Virgin Galactic is ready to launch “Galactic 02” on August 10 from Spaceport America, New Mexico. The mission will send a remarkable passenger list into the skies, including a mother-daughter duo from the Caribbean and an 80-year-old former Olympian.

Caribbean Duo Make History in Space

Keisha Schahaff, a health coach from Antigua and Barbuda, won her seat through a sweepstakes that raised $1.7 million for Space for Humanity, a non-profit promoting wider access to space. Keisha said, “This is a great opportunity for me to feel alive and to just make the greatest adventure ever.”

Joining her is daughter Anastasia Mayers, an 18-year-old physics and philosophy student at the University of Aberdeen. Together, they will be the first mother and daughter to travel to space side by side.

80-Year-Old Olympian Defies Odds to Reach Space

Also on board is Jon Goodwin, an 80-year-old former Olympian who competed as a British canoeist in the 1972 Games. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2014, Goodwin will become only the second person with the condition to blast off into space, proving nothing can hold him back.

Virgin Galactic’s Unique Space Ride

The company’s flights use a twin-fuselage carrier plane that launches from a runway. At altitude, it releases a rocket-powered spaceplane that rockets 53 miles high, giving passengers minutes of zero gravity. After this brief space stop, the spaceplane glides safely back to Earth.

Battle of the Billionaires Heats Up

Since 2004, Virgin Galactic has sold 800 tickets for these suborbital joyrides. Early ticket prices ranged from $200,000 to $250,000, later soaring to $450,000. The firm competes with Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, which sent 32 passengers to space before grounding flights following a 2022 accident. Blue Origin aims to restart flights soon.

Virgin Galactic’s next mission celebrates diversity and the dream of making space accessible to more people. With this historic flight, the company continues to push the envelope of human exploration and inspire the world.
