Five people have been treated by medics after a group of youths on mopeds reportedly launched an acid attack at Burghley Road playing fields in Corby, Northamptonshire. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, has left both onlookers and vehicles damaged.
Emergency services, including armed police, fire crews, ambulance teams, and a police helicopter, were swiftly deployed to the scene. Children had been gathering for football training with Hellenic Fisher FC when a group of individuals on motorbikes, mopeds, and e-bikes rode across the field and reportedly hurled hydrochloric acid into the car park, according to eyewitnesses.
The acid damaged seven vehicles and caused tingling skin for several people who came into contact with the substance. Fortunately, there were no reports of serious injuries, though five individuals received medical attention at the scene.
Sergeant Keely Cox of Corby Police confirmed, “We do not believe this was a targeted attack. Five people have been treated, and while there are no serious injuries, seven cars were damaged.” She added that Operation Pacify, a local initiative to prevent incidents like this, would be fully deployed to catch those responsible.
Several cars, including that of Hellenic Fisher FC coach Russell Dickinson, sustained significant damage, with some vehicles needing extensive repair work. Drivers were able to leave after the acid was washed off their cars.
Club officials expressed frustration over ongoing safety concerns at the venue. Hellenic Fisher FC Chairman Paul Cunningham highlighted the club’s repeated requests for repairs to broken fences and the clubhouse, which has been closed for two years. “Everyone’s safety is paramount,” he said. “This could have happened anywhere, but we will speak to the council to prioritize repairs.”
Those with information about the incident are urged to contact police on 999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 as the investigation continues.
