Fifty Firefighters Tackle Overnight Blaze at Swanwick Boatyard

Fifty firefighters and six fire engines battled through the night to contain a fierce blaze at the famed Swanwick boatyard near Bursledon, Southampton. The fire broke out just after 11:30pm on Sunday in an office building at Deacons Force 4 Chandlery.

Firefighters Face Tough Job Amidst Intense Heat and Smoke

Fire crews from St Mary’s, Fareham, Eastleigh, Hightown, Botley, and the aerial ladder unit from St Mary’s rushed to the scene. They found a well-developed, smoky fire that had spread to the roof. Using three hose reels and two jets, they fought to keep the flames contained mainly to the first floor.

Station Manager Dave Graham said, “It was a very smoky fire, so locating the seat of the blaze inside the office was tough. The building’s construction and insulation caused very high temperatures, making it difficult for crews to get in and douse the flames.”

Hazardous Materials Removed Amid Careful Firefighting

Firefighters bravely entered the building after using high-pressure ventilation to cool the interior. They safely removed explosive flares and other flammable chemicals from the chandlery.

The ground floor suffered smoke and water damage, but the rear premises escaped harm. Fire crews are also using an aerial ladder platform to cut away parts of the front building to ensure the fire is fully out and check structural damage.

Road Closures and Emergency Response Continue

The South Central Ambulance Service dispatched a Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene. Firefighters are expected to remain until at least 6am, with nearby roads closed to traffic. Motorists have been urged to find alternative routes.

The hard work continues as crews battle to bring the blaze under full control at this historic boatyard.
