Knife-Wielding Fugitive Threatens Officers Before Jail
A violent man who threatened immigration officers with a knife and charged a police officer wielding a metal bar has been locked up for nearly two years.
Dangerous Standoff at Peterborough Home
Robert Mugatsi, 47, was wanted on a deportation warrant when immigration officers visited his Linnet, Orton Wistow, Peterborough home on 25 August last year at around 6.30pm.
When officers knocked, Mugatsi made a run for it, sprinting into the garden and trying to scale a fence. But when an officer followed, he dashed back inside the house.
He then opened the front door, brandishing a large hunting knife around seven inches long, and threatened the officer.
Mugatsi even held the knife to his own throat as officers drew their batons and were forced to retreat to their vehicles. He fled before police arrived.
Violent Roadside Drama Ends in Taser and Arrest
Months later, on 17 December at 11.15pm, police spotted Mugatsi driving a Hyundai Tucson near the Iway Inn Hotel on the A1198, Papworth Everard.
When stopped, he gave a false name but passed a breath test. However, after asking to urinate, Mugatsi assaulted an officer, pushing him into a field before running off.
Officers pursued and found him again. Mugatsi tried to punch one officer and advanced aggressively, forcing police to taser him—without success.
He fled into the night and was located two hours later back at the Iway Inn, armed with a metal paint roller and metal bar. He charged at officers shouting: “It’s going to be a big fight.”
Police tasered and arrested him. At Hinchingbrooke Hospital, he kicked an officer during assessment in A&E.
Jail Sentence Reflects Seriousness of Violent Attacks
On 26 April at Peterborough Crown Court, Mugatsi from Ermine Street, Papworth Everard, was jailed for one year and ten months.
He was convicted of two counts of assault by beating on emergency workers, one count of common assault on an emergency worker, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, and affray.
Mugatsi also admitted to using threatening words intended to cause fear of unlawful violence.
DC Debbie Vyse said: “Mugatsi’s repeated assaults on officers were disgusting and the sentence shows how seriously they are taken by the courts. He is dangerous and showed he was not afraid to use violence and weapons against both immigration and police officers.”
