A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) after a suspect fell from an outbuilding and suffered life-changing injuries following the use of a Taser.
PC Liam Newman, 30, based at Ilford Police Station, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
The Incident
The charges relate to an incident on April 24, 2022, in Woodford Green, east London. PC Newman was reportedly pursuing a 61-year-old man on foot when the suspect climbed onto a “shed structure.” During the chase, PC Newman discharged his Taser, resulting in the man falling from the structure.
The suspect sustained life-changing injuries, and the incident prompted an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Investigation and Charges
Following a year-long investigation, the IOPC referred the case to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which subsequently authorised the charge of GBH against the officer.
Police Statement
Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, who oversees policing in the area, acknowledged the seriousness of the case, stating:
“I am acutely aware of the level of public concern following this incident. Our officers understand it is vitally important to maintain public trust and confidence, and that such matters are thoroughly investigated.”
He added:
“Given criminal proceedings are now active, we must now allow the circumstances to be examined in open court.”
Court Appearance
PC Newman is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where the case will begin to be heard.
