Met Police Officer Charged After Suspect Plunges From Shed in Taser Incident
Taser Use Sparks Life-Changing Fall
A Metropolitan Police officer faces serious charges after a dramatic foot chase ended with a suspect crashing from an outbuilding. PC Liam Newman, 30, from Ilford Police Station, has been charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) following the incident in Woodford Green, east London.
On April 24, 2022, PC Newman was pursuing a 61-year-old man on foot when the suspect climbed onto a shed structure. During the pursuit, Newman discharged his Taser, causing the man to fall and suffer life-changing injuries.
IOPC Investigation Leads to Charges
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an extensive year-long investigation. Following their findings, the case was handed over to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which authorised the GBH charge against PC Newman.
Police Boss Responds to Public Outcry
Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, responsible for policing in the area, addressed mounting public concern. He said:
“I am acutely aware of the level of public concern following this incident. Our officers understand it is vitally important to maintain public trust and confidence, and that such matters are thoroughly investigated.”
“Given criminal proceedings are now active, we must now allow the circumstances to be examined in open court.”
Court Date Set for Controversial Case
PC Liam Newman is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court this Wednesday, where the case will start to be heard. The outcome will be closely watched amid ongoing police scrutiny nationwide.
