Person Dies After Incident Near Wantage, Causing Major Delays at London Paddington

A person has tragically died following an incident near Wantage this morning, leading to major disruptions at London Paddington.

The incident was reported shortly before 8:30 a.m. today (September 17), after a casualty was found on the tracks in the Wantage area. Emergency services, including officers and paramedics, were called to the scene, but the individual was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

British Transport Police have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

As a result of the incident, all lines between Swindon and Didcot Parkway were temporarily closed. Although the lines have since reopened, National Rail has warned passengers to expect delays of up to 90 minutes on services between London Paddington and key stations including Penzance, Bristol Temple Meads, and Cardiff Central. The disruption is expected to continue until 3 p.m.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Wantage at around 8:28 a.m. today (17 September) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
