Massive Fire Response in Walthamstow
Shortly before 3am on Thursday, 21 August, twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters were scrambled to Knebworth Avenue, Walthamstow, E17. The blaze was so severe it was declared a Level Two hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incident, prompting specialist crews to join the fight.
Firefighters Battle Blaze from Land and Air
The fire tore through the property, sparking fears it could spread to neighbouring homes. Firefighters used an aerial ladder platform to tackle the flames from above, while teams on the ground worked tirelessly to bring the inferno under control.
Police closed Chingford Road near the A406 junction to clear the way for emergency vehicles and manage the chaotic scene.
Special Teams Deployed as Smoke Chokes Area
The London Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) was also called in, showing the scale and danger of the blaze. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.
Nearby residents were urged to keep doors and windows shut amid heavy smoke drifting through the streets.
Cause Under Investigation – Cannabis Factory Suspected
While the exact cause of the fire is still being probed, early reports suggest the house was operating as a cannabis farm.
“Crews worked extremely hard in challenging conditions to prevent the fire from spreading. Due to the nature of the premises, the incident was declared a Level Two HAZMAT, and additional resources were mobilised. Our fire investigators will remain on scene to establish the cause,” said a London Fire Brigade spokesperson.
Police enquiries into the blaze are ongoing.
