West Yorkshire Police Officer Nominated for National Police Bravery Award

A West Yorkshire police officer’s extraordinary courage and selflessness have earned her a nomination for the prestigious National Police Bravery Awards 2024. PC Jess Bell’s remarkable actions in a harrowing situation undoubtedly saved a man’s life, showcasing her unwavering dedication to protecting the community.

PC Bell’s nomination stems from her response to a concerning safety call involving an individual experiencing a paranoid and psychotic episode. Armed with a kitchen knife and displaying signs of being under the influence of drugs, the individual posed a significant threat to himself and others.

Upon arrival at the scene, PC Bell encountered the distressed individual perched on the roof of a two-story building, brandishing a knife and making threats of self-harm. Despite the imminent danger and the individual’s erratic behaviour, PC Bell remained composed and focused on de-escalating the situation.

Recognizing the urgency of the matter and the need to establish rapport, PC Bell engaged with the individual, assuring him of her intent to help. However, as the situation escalated and the individual began self-harming with the knife, PC Bell’s concern for his well-being intensified.

With the fire and rescue service providing assistance but unwilling to approach while the individual remained armed, PC Bell made a bold decision. Without hesitation, she ascended the ladder alone, fully aware of the inherent risks involved.

Upon reaching the rooftop, PC Bell confronted the individual, who was still wielding the knife. Employing her training and determination, she deployed her Taser multiple times, eventually disarming the individual and administering crucial first aid.

PC Bell’s actions epitomize bravery and professionalism in the face of grave danger. Her swift and decisive intervention prevented a potential tragedy and ensured the individual received the necessary medical attention.

Chief Constable John Robins of West Yorkshire Police commended PC Bell for her heroic efforts, emphasizing that her actions exemplify the highest standards of Polcing. Similarly, West Yorkshire Federation Chair Craig Nicholls praised PC Bell’s bravery and dedication, highlighting her exceptional care and commitment to preserving life.

PC Jess Bell’s nomination for the Police Bravery Award serves as a testament to her courage and unwavering resolve in safeguarding the community, even in the most challenging circumstances.
