The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across London and South East England, in effect from 07:00 to 19:00 BST on Sunday, 6 July 2025.
Heavy rain, lightning, hail, and the risk of flash flooding could cause significant disruption to travel and outdoor activities across the region.
What to Expect:
- Spray and standing water on roads may lead to dangerous driving conditions and longer journey times by car and bus.
- Some train services may be delayed, and passengers are advised to check before travelling.
- Lightning strikes may cause minor structural damage to buildings.
- Flooding of homes and businesses is possible in low-lying areas.
- Short-term power cuts and service outages could affect some locations.
The warning now covers a broad area, including Greater London, Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Buckinghamshire, and parts of the East of England and East Midlands.
Rainfall and Storm Risk
The Met Office reports that 15–25mm of rain could fall within 2–3 hours across many areas. Where repeated thunderstorms occur, 40–60mm of rainfall is possible, raising the risk of flash flooding.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop in western areas first, spreading east throughout the morning.
Safety Advice from the Met Office
- Prepare for flash floods if you are in a high-risk area. Consider making a flood plan and assembling an emergency kit.
- Check travel conditions before setting out, and amend plans to avoid known trouble spots.
- Keep torches, batteries, power banks, and other essentials in case of power outages.
- If outdoors and you hear thunder, seek shelter in a car or enclosed building—never shelter under trees or tall isolated structures.
- Stay updated, as warnings may change quickly throughout the day.
