Brechin, a riverside area in north east Scotland, is bracing itself for the arrival of Storm Babet, as a red weather warning for heavy rainfall and high winds covers parts of the region. Approximately 350 homes in the area are set to be evacuated as authorities prepare for extensive flooding and potential risk to life.
The red weather warning, the highest level of alert issued by the Met Office, includes Perth and Kinross, Dundee, Angus, and south Aberdeenshire. Storm Babet is expected to bring severe weather conditions on Thursday and Friday, prompting Scotland’s deputy first minister, Shona Robison, to urge residents in the affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel and stay at home.
The red weather warning is scheduled to be in effect from 18:00 on Thursday until noon on Friday. With the potential for significant flooding and potential danger, Angus Council has taken proactive measures by opening rest centres to provide shelter and support for those affected.
The rest centres, located at Brechin Community Campus, Montrose Sports Centre, and Forfar Community Campus, were opened at 15:00 BST. Angus Council has requested that individuals coming to the rest centres bring their own sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, and any necessary medication.
