A German Shepherd named Sparrow was put down after being found tied up with a taped muzzle at a home in South Shields. The RSPCA uncovered shocking neglect that led to the dog’s distressing condition.
Shocking Discovery: Muzzle Taped On Tight
Animal welfare officers found Sparrow severely underweight, ribs and spine clearly showing through his frail body. The muzzle on his head wasn’t just strapped on — it was secured with parcel tape and gaffer tape, preventing him from eating or drinking without help. RSPCA Inspector Rowena Proctor explained, “The muzzle was a plastic basket style, tightly bound with tape wrapped around the straps and back of his head to hold it firmly in place.”
Neglect Extended to Other Pets
Two kittens were also found living in filth in the property’s cluttered kitchen. They were covered in fleas, dehydrated, and had no food or water available. None had been neutered, raising fears of an uncontrolled breeding problem. A veterinary exam confirmed Sparrow was suffering from an allergic skin condition and a bacterial infection. The vet said the skin issues could have been managed with proper treatment, but the tight muzzle only made his suffering worse.
Owner Banned from Keeping Animals
Joanne Falconer, 58, of Millais Gardens, admitted two offences under the Animal Welfare Act. The court sentenced her to a five-year ban on keeping animals, a £300 fine, £300 costs, and an £80 victim surcharge. Despite her “well-intentioned but incompetent care,” the neglect led to serious cruelty.
