Terrifying Near Miss on UK Country Road Sparks Outcry

A horse rider has shared a shocking near miss on a quiet rural road, where a speeding car narrowly avoided a serious accident while they were out hacking with a friend. The incident has reignited urgent calls for drivers to be more aware and cautious around horses on UK roads.

Speeding Driver Sparks Fear

The rider, who chose to stay anonymous, recounted how a car flew past them at high speed, just missing both riders and their horses. Despite clear visibility and high-vis clothing, the driver showed no sign of slowing down or giving space.

“It was absolutely terrifying. The horse spooked badly and it could have been a serious accident. If the car had been just a little closer, we could have been thrown onto the road,” the rider said.

The driver blatantly ignored the Highway Code that states motorists should pass horses at no more than 10mph and leave at least two metres between car and horse.

British Horse Society Sounds Alarm

The British Horse Society (BHS) has long campaigned for stronger driver awareness. Recent figures show that two riders are injured every day on UK roads. In 2024 alone, the BHS recorded over 3,500 horse-related incidents reported by riders.

How Drivers Can Keep Horses Safe

  • Slow down to 10mph or less when passing horses.
  • Leave at least two metres of space between your vehicle and the horse.
  • Stay patient—avoid revving your engine or using your horn near horses.

The BHS’s Dead Slow campaign is pushing all road users to respect vulnerable riders and animals sharing the road.

“We love our horses and just want to enjoy them safely. We are not trying to block the roads — just sharing them responsibly,” the rider added.

Local authorities and equestrian groups are now calling for stricter enforcement of the Highway Code rules on horse rider safety, particularly in rural areas where such dangerous incidents are all too common.
