Huge Win for Women: Cheaper Menopause HRT Prescriptions from April

Around 400,000 women across England are set to save hundreds of pounds on menopause treatments thanks to a brand-new Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) prescription scheme launching April 1, 2023.

New Prepayment Certificate Slashes HRT Costs

  • Women prescribed HRT can buy a new Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) covering a full year.
  • The cost? Just two prescription charges – currently £18.70 – slashing annual HRT costs dramatically.
  • The certificate applies to an unlimited number of HRT items, including patches, tablets, and creams.

This means thousands will pay less than £20 a year, making life-changing treatment much more affordable.

Government Backs Women’s Health with Major Step

The new HRT PPC is part of the government’s Women’s Health Strategy for England, aiming to improve care and support for women and girls. Menopause has been declared a key priority.

Steve Barclay, Health and Social Care Secretary, said: “This new certificate will make HRT more accessible than ever before – helping around 400,000 women save hundreds of pounds a year. This is another step in our drive to improve support for millions of women experiencing the menopause.”

Maria Caulfield, Minister for Women, added: “Around three-quarters of women will experience menopause symptoms, with a quarter experiencing severe symptoms – which can seriously impact their quality of life. Reducing the cost of HRT is a huge moment for women’s health in this country.”

Experts Praise Affordable Access to Vital Treatment

Dame Lesley Regan, Women’s Health Ambassador, said: “Making HRT more affordable will have a hugely beneficial impact on the lives of so many women. This prepayment certificate is a major step forward.”

Dr Ranee Thakar, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists President, said: “Cost can be a barrier to accessing menopause treatment – this new scheme is a positive first step.”

Dr Janet Barter, Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare President, said: “This is a big step towards reducing inequalities and improving menopause treatment access.”

Janet Lindsay, CEO of Wellbeing of Women, called it “the right thing to do” to empower women during menopause by cutting prescription costs.

How to Get the HRT Prepayment Certificate

  • Women can apply via the NHS Business Services Authority or at pharmacies selling PPCs.
  • The certificate is valid for 12 months from April 1, 2023.
  • Simply show the certificate at the pharmacy and complete the NHS exemption declaration when picking up HRT products.

This new HRT PPC complements existing prescription help schemes, such as the NHS’s 3-month and 12-month general PPCs, providing flexible options for those with varying prescription needs.

Supply Boost and Ongoing Support

The government is also working with manufacturers to tackle HRT supply issues, ensuring women get uninterrupted access to vital treatments. Weekly supplier talks and quarterly industry roundtables keep the supply chain steady and ready to meet demand.

This new scheme offers hope for thousands suffering menopause symptoms across England, making treatment more affordable, accessible, and easier to manage.
