Hero Cops Rescue Families from Burning Building During Recruitment Drive
Officers from the Met’s Outreach Team were busy signing up fresh recruits on Walthamstow High Street when screams of fire nearby sent them rushing into action.
Blaze Breaks Out in Multi-Occupancy Block
At around 1.20pm on Sunday, June 5, officers heard shouts about a fire on Erskine Road. A block housing six separate families was ablaze, with thick smoke pouring from a first-floor window.
Brave Officers Bolt Into Danger
Without hesitation, the North East Command Unit and local Safer Neighbourhoods officers stormed the burning building, searching room by room despite the choking smoke and flames.
They risked their lives to make sure everyone was out safely before retreating as the fire intensified. Thanks to their quick thinking and courage, nobody was harmed.
More Than Just Law Enforcement
Once the fire was out and the families safe, the officers handed clothing to elderly residents and kept children calm with colouring books and pencils from the recruitment stall – showing the softer side of the Met.
“The bravery and selflessness of all the officers involved in this incident highlight the qualities required to be a police officer,” said Inspector Amy Milton of the Central Outreach Team. “I am grateful everyone inside was rescued safely; this wouldn’t have been possible without the quick thinking of those on the scene.”

Inspector Milton added: “It’s ironic our officers were in the middle of recruiting when this happened – nothing shows the Met at its best than seeing our team leap into action to keep the public safe.”
