Huge Heath Fire Sparks Mass Evacuation in Dorset

Dorset Police rushed to Canford Heath on the evening of Saturday, 23 April 2022, after reports of a massive heath fire at 6:19pm. Firefighters battled the blaze while officers worked to keep the public safe.

Roads Closed and Homes Evacuated

Authorities shut down roads and evacuated around 20 homes on Marshwood Avenue, Culliford Crescent, and Pilsdon Drive as a precaution. Displaced residents were welcomed at Ashdown Leisure Centre, which was set up as an emergency evacuation hub.

Fire Under Control, Residents Return Home

By approximately 10pm, police liaised with the fire service and allowed residents back to their homes. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Police Appeal for Witnesses and Evidence

Sergeant Fern Graham of the Poole Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This fire has caused damage to a significant area of heathland. We are working with the fire service to find out what started it, but the cause is still unknown.

“If you were near Canford Heath that afternoon and have information or footage from dashcams or phones, please contact us. We also thank the fire crews, local community helpers, and Ashdown Leisure Centre for their support.”
