Fake Fines! Fraudsters Pose as Police to Scam Covid Lockdown Victims in Brighton
Scam Alert: Crooks Pretend to Be Undercover Cops
Police are warning the public after scammers tried to dupe a teenager in Brighton by posing as officers handing out on-the-spot fines for coronavirus lockdown breaches. The chilling incident happened around 11pm on Saturday, April 11, on Ditchling Road.
Three men approached the teen, claiming to be undercover police. They said he was being fined for being out during lockdown and even had a device ready to take payment on the spot.
Suspects’ Description and Police Warning
- All three suspects are white men, about 6ft tall, clean-shaven
- One wore a black hooded jumper
- Another wore a grey hooded jumper and a baseball cap
Chief Superintendent Nick May blasted the crooks. “It’s incredibly disappointing to see people using these unprecedented times as an opportunity to commit fraud,” he said. He reminded the public that real fixed penalty notices are only issued to those aged 18 and over, and official confirmation always arrives by mail with payment details.
“Police officers and community support officers will always show proper ID. If someone claims to be an officer, always ask for proof – genuine officers are happy to provide it,” May added.
