Tragedy Strikes at Cheltenham Festival
Shock and sorrow hit the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday as eight-year-old racehorse Hansard suffered a fatal injury in the Arkle Chase. The beloved horse, trained by Gary and Josh Moore, was hurt while running on the flat during the second race of the day.
Cheltenham Racecourse confirmed the grim news: “Hansard sustained a fatal injury. He was quickly dismounted and attended by expert vets, but sadly, the decision was made to put him down. Our heartfelt condolences go to his connections.”
RSPCA Sounds Alarm on Racing Death Toll
The RSPCA expressed devastation at Hansard’s death, marking the 20th racehorse fatality in the UK this year – and it’s only March.
“This is the 20th fatality linked to competitive horseracing in the UK this year alone – and it is only March,” said an RSPCA spokesperson. “Lessons must be learned about what causes these tragedies, both before and during races.”
The charity vowed to push the British Horseracing Authority for stronger safety measures to protect equine welfare on and off the track.
Calls for Safer Racing Practices
The RSPCA urged urgent action to prevent more needless deaths, highlighting the need for improved pre-race checks, better decisions during races, and comprehensive safety protocols.
As racing fans mourn yet another loss, the spotlight returns to the sport’s struggle with equine fatalities and demands for reform grow louder.
